PIAO benchmarked its “BESTS” in the 1st Regional Forum for Internal Auditors in Public Sector
Last June 21-22, 2018, PIAO took part in the 1st Regional Forum for Internal Auditors in Public Sector with the theme “Meeting Today’s Challenge: The Value of Internal Audit in the Public Sector” at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City. The forum was actively participated by representatives from different Government Institutions in the country, as well as delegations from other Asian Countries.
Big names were present in the event, one of them is the Honorable Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, who formally commenced the forum with her speech, which campaigned to uphold integrity in all aspects especially those in public sector. Moreover, the Honorable Ombudsman had given emphasis that our country needs strong political will to be able to achieve good governance, as it will result to not just transparency and accountability but most importantly to the prosperity of our country.
COA Chairman Hon. Michael G. Aguinaldo was also present in the event and tackled about the collaboration of Internal Audit with the State Audit Institution. Ambassador Delia Albert, who is currently the Senior Adviser of SGV, also shared her thoughts on how to have a good and effective negotiation, well as the art of negotiation for internal auditors. The speakers from other countries discussed the state of Internal Auditing in their respective areas, such as Ms. Bron Davis of Australia and Dr. Nurdin of Indonesia. Mr. Abdul Hamid Bin Abdullah of ISACA Singapore tackled the significance of technology in auditing process of public sectors.
The Provinicial Internal Audit Office (PIAO) of Camarines Sur, headed by Atty. Francis Magistrado, was invited to give a talk during the breakaway session with other LGUs and some representative of GOCCs, NGAs, State Universities and other Philippine Government Institutions. The knowledge sharing focused on the humble beginnings of PIAO, its mission, its role to the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur, achievements and most especially its good programs and practices. It was a perfect timing for PIAO to benchmark its competencies and be able to encourage other Government Institutions, knowing that only few have an internal audit office, to have their own internal audit office, to achieve good governance, transparency, accountability and the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs, for it will benefit both the institution and the countrymen.
Truly, PIAO, amidst such international audience, established its relevance as an indispensable office in maintaining good governance. The knowledge sharing of PIAO, thru Atty. Francis Magistrado, drew positive feedbacks. The programs & practices of the office served as an inspiration to other LGUs in the creation of their own internal audit units. Indeed, PIAO’s standards are worthy of being set as a benchmark for Internal Audit in the Public Sector.
